The Universal Building Code (UBC) has adopted new language and requirements for wood fireplaces, specifically that tight fitting, sealed or gasketed doors are now required on any new fireplace construction within the US.. Washington and certain municipalities in California, among others, had already adopted similar requirements on real masonry fireplaces.. Although the language of the code blankets all open wood fireplaces, their are issues that have already created conflict and confusion , namely with Zero Clearance ( premanufactures UL 127 approved) wood burning fireplaces.
