Frequently Asked Questions - Gas Fireplaces
An Ironhaus face attaches to the framework of the fireplace differently on each model. Great care has been taken to ensure that the inside glass door is still operable and that the controls remain accessible after attaching the face.
Direct vent fireplaces are a closed system and require a sealed glass face; the face that comes with the fireplace. Ironhaus door systems have undergone testing to ensure that they are safe and do not interfere with the operation of the fireplace. An additional set of glass doors would affect both safety and operation of your direct vent fireplace.
An Ironhaus face is easily removed. We actually suggest you remove it during the construction phase and store it in a safe place.
Blowers are optional accessories on some Ironhaus gas appliances. Refer to your manual to determine if your model allows for a blower. Adding a blower is easily accomplished if 110 volts AC was provided to the electrical junction box of the fireplace or a 110 volt AC outlet was installed near the fireplace or wall mount system at the time of the initial installation.
If your gas appliance has a standing pilot it will operate during a power outage. If you have the optional blower installed in your gas appliance or the fireplace in which the log set is installed, the blower will not operate if the power goes out.
You can safely leave your pilot burning year round. However, Ironhaus recommends the pilot be turned off during the off-season. This will conserve fuel and preserve the batteries in remote controls (where applicable). The pilot will require servicing to remove foreign particles such as lint, dust, etc. that accumulate during the summer months. Please refer to your owner's manual for proper cleaning instructions.
The direct vent systems have a fixed glass front, which seals the gas burner and combustion firebox off from your home. Air for combustion used by the fireplace comes from outside the home through a vent pipe. A smaller pipe inside the fresh air pipe carries all combustion products to the outside. The vent can be run horizontally through an outside wall or vertically through the roof.
The frequency of your gas appliance servicing and maintenance will depend on use and type of installation. Check the owner's manual for recommendations. You should have a qualified service technician perform an appliance check-up at the beginning of each heat season.
The installation of a direct vent appliance is allowable in a bedroom or any other room in by the National Fuel Gas Standards. Check your local codes to ensure there are no local restrictions.
Most Ironhaus gas fireplaces models can be ordered for use with natural or propane gas. If you have purchased an appliance with an incorrect gas orifice or if you have changed to a different type of fuel at your home, you may need a conversion kit. Contact your nearest dealer to determine if your model can be converted. Use only approved conversion kits. All conversion kits must be installed by a qualified installer for the certification and warranty of the fireplace to remain valid.
A direct vent fireplace is a sealed combustion fireplace. Doors must be shut and sealed for proper ventilation during the operation. If the glass door assembly and venting pipe are not properly seated, connected, and sealed, combustion by-products may leak into the home.
No spark at the pilot is an indication of a loose connection, a bad ground, or cracked ceramic around the electrode.
Check to ensure electrode wire is connected at the push button igniter (where applicable) and at the electrode. Loose connections can be tightened by gently squeezing the loose connection with small pliers. If the piezo is held in place by a nut, ensure the nut is tightened properly. A cracked ceramic igniter must be replaced.
If your fireplace or stove is experiencing pilot or burner outage, the gas appliance may need to be cleaned. Please refer to your owner's manual for specific cleaning instructions for your model.
The pilot flame heats a thermocouple that produces DC millivolts to energize the control valve. This allows the pilot to remain lit after releasing the control knob.
A dirty pilot may not produce enough heat to generate sufficient voltage to operate the control valve. Cleaning may be necessary.
Check the pilot flame to ensure it is burning a solid blue flame. A loose thermocouple connection may be at fault. To check the connection, loosen thermocouple and tighten it finger tight, then turn an additional 1/4 turn. If the problem continues, contact your nearest service center or qualified gas technician to have the unit serviced.
Check your gas supply shut off valves to make sure the gas is turned on. Most gas appliances have lighting instructions attached. Wall units or log sets will have hang tags or a decal affixed to the side or grate of the unit. Fireplace systems will have metal rating plates or vinyl tags attached to the leg support in the lower compartment. If the instructions can not be located please refer to the owner's manual for your model appliance.
LP/Propane wall mount space heaters, gas logs, and fireplace systems require a minimum 100 lb. size propane cylinder for proper operation. The vaporization rate of the fuel in smaller sized tanks can not keep up with the fuel requirements for the appliance. This will cause the liquid propane in the tank to freeze. Refer to the installation manual for proper gas pipe sizing especially if you have more than one gas appliance.
Direct vent and B-vent (natural vent) appliances use a specific direct vent or b-vent pipe to vent combustion gases to the outdoors. Configurations for specific pipes vary depending on the individual installation. See the installation instructions in the manual for your specific model to ensure the proper pipe size and configuration is used for your application.
